Paddling a boat down a river of tears
There was an old man I’d been longing to hear.
Though he is gone I look for him
in every star in the north every bird on the wing.
Since he’s been gone been wandering through
Like a leaf in a river, don’t know what to do.
When out of the pines an eagle flew
With eyes that are blue like mine and a spirit I knew.

All of these questions are killing me.
Are you real or just something I see
When I’m lost, when I’m alone
When I can’t find my way back home?

He called to me, showed me his nest
Invited me in but I had to protest.
I knew if I went I would never return
And I still have a hearth that needs my fire to burn
A life before me yet to behold
And a lover with whom I am meant to grow old.
With pain in my heart I made to retreat
Before I could he beckoned me to speak.

I told him all of these questions are killing me.
What is eternal, what’s it mean to be free?
If I leave you now will I leave here alone?
How will I find my way back home?

I looked in his eyes the mirrors of mine
Found all I am there buried inside.
There I found all I need.
You see, all he was is reflected in me.
I know I’m good, I’m steady and true
My love is fierce, see I learned that from you.
Closing his eyes he lowered his head.
Before he flew away this is what he said:

“Don’t waste your life crying for me.
I am eternal and my soul is free.
If you’re lost, when you’re alone
I’ll help you find your way back home.”

I’ll just be paddling my boat year after year
But they’ll always be an old man
I’m longing to hear.
